standard and a few other organizations. we have been putting the chuck hagel nomination for the secretary of defense. also less partisan activities, foreign policy, try to make sure the u.s. stays strong, even though i believe president obama's policies are taking us in the wrong direction. i have talked to people about restarting a small republican guard from 1994 -- group from 1994, the project for republican future, which tried -- party was a little exhausted, the conservative movement was exhausted, it tried to reinvigorate things. it worked for gingrich. it opposed the clinton health care plan. now is the time to think about the republican future to make sure -- there are many good ideas out there, national affairs, the national review, they are publishing interesting positive policy agendas for getting us out of the whole we are in on that -- on debt, deficit, reforming health care, financial services, foreign policies. there are a lot of good young politicians. i'm not sure anybody is going around the country and talking to younker -- younger voters and officials who might want to

has nominated senator, former seven for chuck hagel of nebraskaa vietnam combat veteran now to replace him. but hagel has been outspoken in the criticism of his party and he may have some difficulty with his confirmation. the other major depature from the cap net, secretary of the treasury tim geithner who over saw the bail out of the auto industry and recovery of the financial system. the president now nominated jack lew to the job, he was a behind the scenes guy, director of the office of management and budget, both in this administration and that of president clinton. that nomination is expected to go smoothly, but there is one high profile and sometimes controversial cabinet member who is staying on. that is attorney general eric holder. he's come under fire from republicans and some of the democrats in congress, some of the justice department policies, particularly a plan to send guns in to mexico. but holder wants to stay and the president clearly intends to allow him to do that. of course, there will somebody other cabinet and senior staff changes soon, but many of the same clos

of state, john kerry, and chuck hagel, which he has gone a lot of flak for it, to the secretary of defense? >> those are promising choices. john kerry may finally liberate himself with a push from chuck a goal. they are going to have to take on the military-industrial complex and reduce those mass of weapons systems that were designed for a soviet-peristyle hostility like the f-22 and nuclear subs. they're going have to cut the military budget down from its $800 billion, and get out of afghanistan and iraq. and whether they have the chemistry and the political fortitude to do so, it remains to be seen. but i think they are a better choice than their predecessors. i think john kerry will be better than hillary clinton, who had to be macho all the time. and panetta, chuck hagel will be better than panetta, who was kind of a fill in. and spent weekends back in california where he really wants to retire. there is a little promise there. but again, it requires the resurgence of mass demonstrations in washington this spring to develop a convergent policy from the militarization of foreign-policy

chuck hagel from becoming our next secretary of defense. a new conservative group with anonymous donors called americans for a strong defense is running ads urging five democrats to vote against confirming hagel. another is called use your mandate. it is also new. it also has anonymous donors. it claims to be a liberal gay rights groups but buys its ad time through a republican firm. it has no web site and no physical address. it is, however using ads and mailers to call hagel anti-gay, anti-woman and anti-israel. this is part of a larger story in "the new york times" reporting at least five other groups are engaged in trying to block the president's choice. and the increase emergence of anonymous dollars and shady front groups is likely a result of citizens united. that 2010 decision that opened the floodgates to allow interested parties to inject endless outside money into our political campaign. >> i hate citizens united. >> me, too. npr reporting for the fives time today, google is posting its policies on what information it turns over to the government as part of an effort to win t
